On September 18, 2006 on Manuel Avila Camacho Blvd, the Prayer Plaza was opened. In the center of the square, you can see a bronze statue of Pope John Paul II, on whose plaque you can read the dates of the five visits of the Pope to Mexico.
This statue was created by artist Bernardo Luis Lopez Artasanchez, the creator of several works placed in the State of Veracruz, such as; The Spanish Immigrant Statue that was unveiled in December 2009 on Veracruz’s Malecon, the sculpture of Hugo Sanchez his famous "Huguiña", the Image of Our Lady of St. Anne with the Virgin Mary at her side placed in the atrium of the Santa Ana Parish, and the recent Statue of Edgar Hernandez-El Niño Cero. This four-year old Mexican boy was "patient zero" of the H1N1 influenza of which he survived. His small statue can be seen in the community of La Gloria in the municipality of Perote, some 270 km (168 mi) east of Puerto de Veracruz.
