The Santa Maria del Tule Tree, is recognized by the SEMARNAP (Environment, Natural Resources & Fishing Secretary)as one of the most noteworthy trees in the State of Oaxaca. It is famous within Mexico and beyond for the exceptional diameter of the trunk, which measures 14.36 meters (47 ft) and has a circumference of 45 meters (147 ft).
Botanists have classified this tree as Taxodium Mucronatum, thought to be over 2000 years old, which corresponds to the Sabine group (also known as Ahuehuete), and reaches a height of more than 40 meters (131 feet).
It is estimated that this natural wonder has a volume of 705 cubic meters (922 cubic yards), and an approximate weight of 509 tons, and can thus be considered as one of the biggest and oldest trees in the world.
