Oaxaca Ethnobotanical Garden
Oaxaca Ethnobotanical Garden
The wealth that the State of Oaxaca can offer includes the largest group of plant and animal species across the country. And to know these wonders, it isn’t even necessary to tirelessly traverse the state. All you have to do is visit the Jardin Etnobotánico at the Centro Cultural Santo Domingo, where since 1998 they have been hard at work planting varieties of plants originating from different climatic regions of the state.
In this area of almost 6 acres, there are 7,219 collected specimens, of which there are 965 different species (11% of the flora of the state). The garden is closed in by the architectural beauty of the old convent of Santo Domingo that was built in the 16th and 17th centuries for the Dominican friars. And keeping this in mind the original designers of the garden, art teachers Francisco Toledo and Luis Zárate, did so without neglecting the aesthetic touch to the botanical park.
The Botanical gardens offer bridges and ramps for disabled access, guided tours in Spanish, public tours for school and college groups, a library open to the public, conferences, courses and workshops, advice for the community in conservation of endemic plants, educational support, donations of plants propagated at the Garden for educational institutions, parks and public spaces. The Garden also can be rented for social and cultural events.
