The Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan is located in a building built in the 16th century. Since 1884, it has been the most important school of higher education on the peninsula. The Autonomous University of Yucatan has become one of the most important institutions of higher education in Mexico, and each year the quality of graduates from the school and the positive effects of the programs developed by their agencies and departments, increase the outstanding reputation of the UADY. In addition to the building having exquisite architecture, its central courtyard is where the splendid University Ballet Folklorico and the traditional Serenata Universitaria take place every Friday night, an event not to be missed. These events are part of the most representative cultural presentations that the city offers on weekdays for the general public as part of the tourist attractions.
