The Neighborhood of San Juan

The Neighborhood of San Juan
The Barrio de San Juan is known for its distinctive arch, which formerly in old Merida was the symbol indicating the end of the city. It is now appreciated as a beautiful park where you see the San Juan Church which gave the district its name during the colonial period, and was built between 1769 and 1770 where a 17th century chapel formerly stood. Inside the Church is a corridor with Muslim influences that is probably the only remaining vestige of the original chapel. Previously on the south side of the temple stood a bullring, that was demolished in 1910, to make space for a monument to Benito Juarez that still remains today.
