Information
Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion it was built originally as a convent of the town and was founded by the first twelve Franciscan friars who arrived in the country in 1525. The complex consists of Atrium, Open Chapel, Capilla (Chapel)de la Santa Cruz, Capilla de los Dolores, Capilla del Carmen, Capilla de la Tercera Orden and  Temple of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. In the mid-eighteenth century the church holds the rank of parish. It was in the late nineteenth century that the Pope Leon XIII issued a decree by the erection of the bishopric of Cuernavaca with ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the State of Morelos and thus The Church of la Asuncion became Cathedral. After the restoration of 1957 by the Department of Colonial Monuments,  they removed the lime layer covering the walls and thus were discovered remnants of mural paintings of the eighteenth century depicting the arrival in Japan and the martyrdom of the holy Mexican Felipe de Jesus and his companions. Other fresh of incomparable beauty show the Pope Inocencio II blessing the missionaries with floral and geometric motifs in black and white.
