Construction started on the Cathedral of Santiago in 1745 and was finally completed in 1800. At first it was only a parish but on June 23, 1891it acquired the title of Cathedral.

Its architecture is a blending of styles ranging from Baroque to neoclassical. The most important pattern of the enclosure is the Holy Christ of the Cane made from corn stalks.

The Cathedral of Santiago is located in the center of the city of Saltillo and is easy to distinguish because of its large tower, 81 meters high topped by an iron cross, which was added in 1887.
