Since 1964, the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca (formerly known as the Regional Museum of Oaxaca), has been located in the former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzman, one of the most important colonial buildings of Oaxaca.
The cloister itself is part of the exhibition for its historical and decorative richness. Most noteworthy is: the garden fountain, the arcaded corridors  and Gothic arched domes with ribbing, the frescoes on the walls, and the oil paintings that represent virgins, saints and monks. In the corridor perimeter of the cloister is a series of steles, that represent the glyphs and dancers from Monte Alban.
