Information

The Plaza de la Constitucion has been formerly known by other official  names such as : Plaza de Armas, Plaza Principal, Plaza Mayor and Plaza del Palacio. Its current name was received in 1813, when it was here in the New Spain that the Spanish Constitution was sworn in, after being promulgated in Cadiz the year before. Before the conquest, here is where the Templo Mayor and the palace of Moctezuma Xocoyotzin were located, for which the new colonizers choose this specific site to found their new colony on what was formerly the political and religious center of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire. The north side of the square is bordered with the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City, the south side with the government building of the Federal District, to the east with the Palacio Nacional,  and to the west with administrative buildings and commercial stores. This zocalo is considered as one of the largest main squares in the world and it becomes an occasional venue to many art, cultural and social events.
