Information

The Temple of San Francisco in the City of Celaya highlights the purity and elegance of the altarpieces and the spectacular portico to the temple.  Its proportionate neoclassical forms date back to 1818 and 1820 thanks to the input from the brilliant Celayense architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras. This temple was rebuilt between 1683 and 1715. The façade has a bronze plaque with the following description: On October 12, 1570, the founding of The Village of Our Lady of the Conception of Zalaya was authorized. Approximately around December 1577, Otrega D. Martin and his wife Ma Magdalena de la Cruz, one of the first founders, donated the image of the Immaculate Conception which had been brought from Spain. In 1774 before this image, authorities and residents renewed their oath of patronage made by their ancestors. On October 12, 1909, by the grace of Pius X it was solemnly crowned by Archbishop D. Atenogenes Silva. Today on October 12, 1970, Celaya in the fourth centenary of its foundation reaffirms its willingness to have the Immaculate Conception, as their only patron.
