The San Marcos Cathedral of Tuxtla Gutierrez
The San Marcos Cathedral of Tuxtla Gutierrez
The Catedral de San Marcos owes it’s name to the faithful worship that the town of Tuxtla Gutierrez dedicated to St. Mark the Evangelist.
Founded in the second half of the 16th century, the church has undergone transformations over the centuries. The apse is the only thing that has been preserved from the colonial era, and it is a reflection of the colonial architecture of Chiapas. The great tower houses a carillon of 48 bells, which with the passing of each hour, accompany in melody the figures of the apostles who parade on a visible pedestal in the main facade.
