The Ruta del Pueblo Fantasma rewards with spectacular views of Real de Catorce from the higher altitudes in the mountains. The route leads to the ghost town of the Sierra de Catorce, and past entrances of several deep mines. It starts at the Ogarrio Tunnel, where you take a winding road that weaves around the mountain. Before coming to Ghost Town, the area of the "Hacienda" is passed, a collection of old buildings that made up the mine of the Immaculate Conception. Further down the trail, the El Compromiso and Valencia mines are part of Ghost Town, where some remains of large buildings, mine shafts, and a set of rooms where gunpowder was stored, can be seen. The tour can be done in about a 3 hour hike, or on one of the horseback tours that are operated by trained guides who know every path to perfection and provide better access to each site. If you choose to hike this trail, it is important to consider that this stone path ascends high altitudes, and depending on the season, it can rain or fog over suddenly without notice.
