To the southeast of Mexico, on warm humid tropical plains crossed by rivers, dotted with lakes, swamps, coasts and lush vegetation, we find the state of Tabasco.It has a great variety of scenery, ecotourism development and wildlife refuges that offer great opportunities for adventure tourism; a third of the country’s fresh water is in rivers, lakes and swamps in the state.
Due to its valuable location, Tabasco is considered the beginning and end of the Mayan World. In this area you can visit Villahermosa, the state capital. It is in the region of the Gulf Coast, in the southeastern part of Mexico, and has a warm humid climate with rainfall throughout the year. The minimum temperature is 24º C (78 degrees Fahrenheit) and maximum average of 29º C (88 degrees Fahrenheit). Known as the Emerald of the Southeast, it is a cosmopolitan city and an ideal place for conferences and conventions that has the best shopping, entertainment and services in the Southeast.
This city blends modernity and a rich cultural heritage with a variety of tourist attractions: parks, such as Tomás Garrido Canabal of great beauty and the Park - Museum La Venta with an interesting light and sound show, museums, such as the History of Tabasco ; and lots of fun at the entertainment and business center on the boardwalk with a variety of restaurants, bars and nightclubs or at the Tabasco 2000 complex, the city’s newest area, where the main administrative buildings are: City Hall, the Government Administrative Center, the Planetarium and the Mall Galleries Tabasco, which has numerous department stores, boutiques, restaurants and even a 5 star hotel.
In Tabasco tourists may also enjoy the Carnival, a lively parade of floats, music and masquerade, in addition to its famous Fair: Expo Tabasco known and appreciated as one of the best in the country, full of hype, frenzy, and the music and traditions of Tabasco.
The main streets of Villahermosa and the waters of the Grijalva overflow with liveliness with a parade of allegorical cars and boats.
The Expo Tabasco provides a space for healthy recreation for Tabasco family and visitors, and takes place between the months of April and May.
The geographical position of this city allows easy access to various tourist routes which you can enjoy the majestic scenery of mountains, forests and wetlands. Nearby you’ll visit the town of Nacajuca, whose great artisan plaza specializes in palm and embroidery items.
In Agua Selva you will witness great scenery, majestic waterfalls, various tree species where you can sign-up for eco-tours and observe the exotic specimens of flora and fauna, or be more adventurous and go cave diving, rafting, climbing, camping, hiking, among others.
Just 15 kms from the city is the theme park Yumka representing the main ecosystems of Tabasco which offers guided tours. The Biosphere Reserve Centla Marshes has a tour of the Usumacinta and Grijalva rivers and an the Interpretation Centre Uyotot - Jaa, to help visitors understand the importance of this natural wonder through three interactive exhibition halls.
In any of the cities and towns in the region there are regional delicacies like roasted lizard, smoked oysters and tapesco, rich sausages, corned beef with chaya, or the traditional pozol (a drink made from ground cocoa mass), which make up part of its culinary heritage and are inspired by the ancient Mayan and Chontal recipes. The archaeological sites, that were once the capital of the Olmec and Maya cultures, infuse a desire to travel the Cocoa Route and be captivated by the warmth of the people of Tabasco and its tasty cuisine.
