Durango is one of the most important cities in northern Mexico combining architectural beauty with the natural landscapes of Barranca de San Quentin and the Sierra Madre Occidental.

 Victoria de Durango was founded due to its proximity to the Cerro de Mercado in which large amounts of silver, iron, and other minerals were found.

It was also a strategic point in the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro; an extensive travel route in the 16th century by Spanish conquistadors for commercial and military purposes.

In 2010 the city of Durango was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The architectural wealth of Durango can be seen in the buildings of baroque, neoclassical and gothic style in the streets of its historic center.

Along the pedestrian walkway of Corridor Constitución is one of the most friendliest spaces to stroll in the city as it crosses through the Plaza de Armas and ends at Las Alamedas where there are restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Among the main tourist attractions in the city are the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral Basilica Menor, the Chupaderos movie set where they filmed over 150 movies, and the cable car of Durango where you can admire the beauty of the city from the top.

To delight the palates of its visitors Durango offers various dishes of meat, their traditional gorditas, caldillo or beef stew, and regional sweets.

The typical crafts of Durango are backpacks and elaborate baskets and bags made from various native plants including ixtle, mesquite, bejuco, and lechuguilla. Also you can find lots of pottery and fine leather works like bags, belts, boots, and saddles and more.

The state of Durango is home to different ethnic groups such as the Huichol, Cora, Tarahumara, and Tepehuano. Its mining tradition, together with the importance of preserving the ancestral traditions of the indigenous groups living in this region, make Durango a destination rich in history and culture.

The City of Durango is in the center of the State of Durango, in the Valle del Guadiana.

It is bordered on the north by the Valle de Canatlan, to the south and west by the Sierra Madre Occidental, to the southeast by the Sierra del Registro, and to the east the plains area.
