Comitan de Dominguez, formerly Comitán de las Flores, is a beautiful and quiet Magic Town in the state of Chiapas. It was originally called Balun Canan by the Mayans.

The architectural richness of Comitan is characterized by majestic religious and civic buildings dating from the colonial era and others of neoclassical style that can be seen in each of its nine traditional neighborhoods: La Pila, La Cruz Grande, Santo Domingo, San Jose, Jesusito, Yalchivol, Guadalupe, San Sebastian and El Calvario.

Among the traditional dishes of Comitán include snacks of patashete, chilevinagre, el pan compuesto, las chalupas, traditional sweet tamales and pork ribs in salsa verde and many more. In Comitan you can enjoy the same traditional temazcales that the Mayans and Aztecs used to purify the body and spirit.

Besides being a beautiful destination Comitán is also the gateway to several national parks such as the Ecological Reserve of Las Nubes and the Lakes of Montebello. Among the most popular crafts of Comitán are jewelry and pottery, woolen and cotton garments, talavera, leather, baskets, and palm items.

How to get there?

The city of Comitan is bordered to the north by Amatengo del Valle, Chanal, and Las Margaritas, to the south by La Trinitaria and Tzimol, and to the east by Las Margaritas, La Independencia and La Trinitaria and finally to the west with Tzimo, Socoltenango, Las Rosas, and Amatenango del Valle.

To reach Comitán take Highway 19D coming into San Cristobal de las Casas and then State Highway 190.
