The archeological site of Monte Alban is located on top of a level hill in the region that frames the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, also know as Oaxaca Valley. From the heights of Monte Alban one can see the three arms of the Oaxaca Valley: to the northwest- Valley Etla; eastward- Tlacolula Valley and to the south- Valley Zimatlan Ocotlán.

This ancient capital of the Zapotec people, was continuously occupied for 1200 years, from 500 BC up to 750 D.C.  Then it was subsequently occupied by the Mixtec people until shortly before the arrival of the Spaniards. At its height, Monte Alban occupied an area of 6.5 square km and had a population of around 40,000 inhabitants. Over a vast expanse stretch the pyramids, temples, several courtyards, palaces and ball court. Graves have been found with rich ornamentation, especially the famous Tomb 7 know for the richness of the offerings found on the inside by Alfonso Caso. This is the most important archaeological city in Oaxaca and one of the highlights of Mesoamerica. Montel Alban is located only 8 km (5 mi) from the capital.

Tour guides, a bookstore, a cafe with a terrace, and parking are all available at the archeological zone. 

It is open Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00.  Entrance is $51 pesos which includes entrance to the museum and the archeological site.
