Parks and SquaresThe Plaza de Armas and City HallZacatecas

The Plaza de Armas square is enclosed by the Cathedral and the Zacatecas City Hall. It is one of the largest and most important spaces in the city, which is evident in its role as the main forum of the major festivals and celebrations that take place.

The Palacio de Gobierno is housed in a 17th century building that was the former home of two distinguished members of colonial royal Zacatecas: Field Marshal Don Vicente Zaldivar and Mendoza, and later the Counts of Santiago de la Laguna. This building is one of the few examples of the Baroque civil architecture from the colonial period. Inside is a central courtyard that is surrounded by rooms, of which, the main room called the Reception Hall is the most noteworthy. In its main staircase, there is a mural-relief by artist Antonio Pintor Rodriguez.
