The original name of this region was San Francisco del Valle de Temascaltepec and was a quiet farming town. In 1937 started the construction of the power plant of Ixtapantongo, better known as Miguel Aleman Hydroelectric System. For this project were flooded 2,900 hectares of agricultural land which formed the centre of the valley so, in this way was formed this artificial lake which nowadays is the heart of the city and where many water sports and boat tours can be practised.
