Parks and SquaresCivic Plaza of Tuxtla GutierrezTuxtla Gutiérrez

Tuxtla Gutierrez’s Plaza Cívica is surrounded by the major government buildings of the city, the State Capital Building, built from 1979 to 1981, the City Hall, the State Congress, and the San Marcos Cathedral.

This square also has two monuments: the statue of Joaquin Miguel Gutierrez, the city’s eponymous hero, who fought for the establishment of federalism in the first half of the 19th century, and the Statue of Liberty breaking the chains of slavery, a tribute to the supporters of General Carlos A. Vidal, who were killed in the shooting of the pre-election fight on October 12, 1924, where supporters of the Red Party confronted those of the Blue Party.
