Located east of the Church of Carmen, Plaza España was long called Plaza del Carmen (Plaza of Carmel).

Its current name was given in 1910 during the celebrations of Independence.

Surrounded by the streets of Lerdo, Santos Degollado, Licenciado Verdad, and Cosmovitral Garden, each year it is the setting for the festivities in honor of the Lady of Mount Carmel.

It is best known as Plaza del Quijote as it is adorned by a sculpture of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, the work of the sculptor and engraver Lorenzo Raphael; markets, craft stalls and circuses are also set up there.
