Construction of the Teatro de la Paz started in 1889, during the height of the epoca of Porfirio Diaz, for which its architecture is a good example of the French avant-garde that prevailed in Mexico in the late 19th century. Even today, its neoclassical facade crowned by the huge dome in Belgium zinc, is the highest representation of evening galas in San Luis Potosi. Considered to be one of the most superb theaters in Mexico, it was restored in 1949.

One of the main cultural centers of the city, its large main hall has seating for 1,450 spectators. Upon entering the theater, at the center of the large lobby stands a sculpture of a ballet dancer, by Joaquin Arias, and mosaic murals by artist Fernando Leal. Attached to the main hall, there is the Flavio F. Carlos Hall for concerts, and the Gedovius Germain Hall for expositions.
