Built in 1528 and remodeled in the early eighteenth century, the San Cristobal de las Casas Cathedral was dedicated to the Assumption, and is the monument most representative of the city.

Its first parish priest was Fray Bartolome de las Casas, defender of the Indians.

The interior retains interesting pieces of art, including two  beautiful wood altarpieces in salomonic baroque style covered with gold leaf and the paintings of artist Juan Correa.

His style denotes an austere Baroque touch with mudejar details. The cathedral contains many treasures, which makes it well worth a in depth visit.
