Built in a Noclassical style, the Theatre of the Republic began in 1845 and opened on May 2, 1852 under the name of Teatro Iturbide.  It has since witnessed many events relevant to the country’s history. On September 16, 1854 the National Anthem was performed for the first time.

In 1867, it was the venue of the court martial which sentenced to death the Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, Imperial General Miguel Miramon, and Tomas Mejia.

On February 5, 1917 the Constitution of the United Mexican States was enacted and it is now home to the most varied art forms of people from Queretaro as well as national and international artists.
