Bacalar or in Mayan ‘Bakhalal,’ means "near or surrounded by reeds.” The most important feature of this town is its lagoon, known also as the ‘Laguna de los Siete Colores.’ Tourism is another main attraction in the town, offering activities like boat rides and scuba diving in the famous Blue Cenote, so pure and crystalline that you can see to a depth of nearly 30 meters from the surface. Fort San Felipe Bacalar, built in 1729 as a defense against the attacks from English pirates, is another important site to visit.  Inside the Fort is the Museum of the Caste War, that exhibits a collection of archaeological and religious articles found in the region.
