The archaeological site of Zaachila is located at the center of Villa de Zaachila, 15 kms (9 mi) southeast from Oaxaca City on Federal Highway 131. Declared an archaeological monument on July 8 1994, this was the last capital of the Zapotec empire.  Among its main structures are sets of palaces and temples, and decorated tombs filled with important materials.

The main area is comprised of a palace where two tombs were discovered, one with extraordinary depictions of characters such as the  Gentlemen of Hell , and others called  5 Flower  and  9 flower.

In Tomb 2 an offering was found that consisted of valuable objects of gold, jade and other materials.

The town of Zaachila is a small place and it is easy to find your way around to tour its historical monuments, namely the church and the main square.

The pre-Hispanic traditions and customs have been preserved in the town, which can be seen every Thursday during the local “tianguis” or street market. This street market is one of the best know among tourists visiting the state.

This site is open Monday through Sunday from 8:00 to 5:00. Entrance fee: $31.00 pesos.
