Between 1729 and 1737  a majestic convent and a temple were built and occupied by the nuns of the Convent of St. Catherine of Siena on May 3, 1738 , who moved in a big procession to their new home. The nuns stayed on the site until 1863.
Inside the temple is a corn cane Christ  and orchids of the era in which the bishop of Vasco de Quiroga headed teaching crafts to the indigenous of the region of Michoacan.
Although the temple is dedicated to Santa Catarina, is known commonly as "Nuns" because it was attended by Dominican sisters who used to live at the College of Santa Rosa, known today as Conservatoire de las Rosas.
