A Heritage of the Nation site, the Templo de la Compania de Jesus was erected at the end of the 17th century,  on top of an old chapel. It formed part of an educational and religious compound that was built over the block, known as the San Francisco Javier College. Later, when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish territories under the orders of Charles III, the building was used for various purposes.  But, from 1823 onward, it began gradually to be demolished to make way for the Cabo Piña Street (today Callejon Congreso), and a theater on which the Jose Peon Contreras Theater was later erected, as well as other buildings that can still be admired today.
