Gabriel Vicente Gahona Pasos "Picheta" was the brilliant illustrator of the comic magazine Don Bullebulle that was published in Merida in 1847. In Merida he founded the first training academy of printmaking in Mexico in 1848. A promoter of the arts in Yucatan, he taught drawing and painting at the academy of sciences and literature, and he was a member of the founding board of the Yucatan Museum in 1866. He was later in charge of the teaching of drawing in the Literary Institute in 1867, and then mayor of Merida in 1880. Picheta certainly has been one of the most interesting Yucatecan figures of the last century and, he was unknowingly one of the best printmakers, if not the best that Mexico has produced in the last century.

The Pasaje Picheta is a small bazaar located near the City Hall where you can go and buy curios and souvenirs. There is Yucatecan music every evening which you can enjoy while drinking a soda or enjoying a natural fruit sorbet. Inside the building there is a tribute to the great writers of romantic music, with a framed picture and short biography of the various artists.
