It was in 1887 that a few outdoor stands was born as the Lucas Galvez Market.  Today, the Mercado Municipal is covered and has more than a thousands stands, and it the most important market in all of the Yucatan Peninsula. Those who fall in love with the Yucatan cuisine musn’t miss the opportunity to buy the delicious ingredients that are essential for the traditional dishes such as: relleno negro, achiote or powdered habanero chile.  Tamarind and Horchata concentrates are also traditional for preparing tasty fresh juices. Xtabentun is an alcoholic beverage typical of the peninsula, prepared with the pines of the maguey that are known as henequen.  This drink is very similar to tequila or mezcal. And are you looking for any special crafts in particular? They are all available at the market where merchants offer hammocks, guayaberas shirts, palm, clay and wood products and of course, unique products made with henequen found nowhere else in the country.
