ArchitectureThe Archeological Site of IzamalMérida

Izamal is a Mayan name that comes from Itzamna or Zamna, meaning “Dew that descends from heaven”. Izamal is also a municipality in the state of Yucatan, located right in the middle of the peninsula, 45 miles east of the city of Merida, and you can reach it on the state highway that connects to Tekanto. It is also known as “The city of hills” or “The city of three cultures”. In it flow the echoes of the Mayan past with their pyramids as witness, the songs of the Spanish Conquest sung between the walls of their temples, and the voices of the present in its people. The area became especially known when, in 1993, Pope John Paul II chose it for one of his meetings when coming to Mexico. But by itself, Izamal is a picturesque village that is not easy to forget. It is an important cultural center that has very good reasons for receiving the title of one of Mexico’s “Magical Towns.”
