These catacombs are the hallmark of the Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They were created in order to raise funds to continue the construction of the religious site.

In 1924 work began, but two years later a great flood stopped the work. Shortly thereafter, the religious conflict of the Cristero War began, so it wasn’t until 1930 that construction resumed.

Today, these catacombs contain the remains of 1,919 people and are visited annually by a large number of tourists and faithful of the country and abroad.
