The original construction of the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the work of the Jesuit Brothers, began around the year 1731. In 1767, the order was expelled from Mexico.

This church is known for its extraordinary stained glass manufactured in Barcelona, which show different representations of the Virgin Mary.

In 1896, missionaries Children of Immaculate Mary occupied the building and asked for permission to demolish the church and build a new one, according to the standards of the new Catalan Gothic style.
