Parks and SquaresBaratillo PlazaGuanajuato

The formal name of this square is Plaza Joaquín González y González or General Manuel González. But Plaza del Baratillo is the common name that has been used since the colonial era. Flowers, fruits and vegetables at affordable prices were formerly sold here.

In fact, there used to be a market until around 1893. In the center of the square is green quarry fountain, with two carved bowls on which a column sits supporting a large shell, adorned with a dolphin in each of the four directions.

The fountain comes from the nearby Plaza de la Paz, where it was located until being removed to put in its place the Monument of Peace.

The Plaza del Baratillo is one of the most typical squares of Guanajuato, where they sell goods, antiques and other curiosities.
