Opening of the Presa de la Olla Floodgates
The Dia de la Apertura de la Presa de la Olla or The Opening of the Floodgates, has its origins in the 18th century when the custom was to clean the dam.
Over time it became a popular festival which takes place the first Monday of July.
The signal to open the floodgates, is executed by the state governor raising a white handkerchief at 1:00 pm sharp.
During this day off (it is a holiday for Government employees), Florencio Antillon Park is filled with food stands (tacos, popsicles, breads, corn, french fries, beers, etc..) and children’s games, while in the kiosk the State Band plays before and after they open the gates, traditional pieces such as the famous Vals Sobre Las Olas by Juventino Rosas and the anthem of Guanajuato.
