Nahuatl word meaning "in the old temple." It was in  pre-Hispanic times an important political and religious center, a neighbour of the ancient Cuauhnahuac. It was inhabited by the tlahuicas who in mid-thirteenth century settled in the western part of Morelos from the mythical Aztlan. The territory was dominated by mexicas towards 1427, so the lands were integrated into the empire under the command of tlatoani Itzcoatl. The main buildings on which rise temples are arranged around a plaza. The common people lived on the outskirts of the ceremonial area, but there are no remnants of their houses then they were destroyed by modern urbanization of the city. It is open Monday to Sunday from 10:00hrs to 17:00hrs.
