It is the oldest civil construction which is preserved in Mexico because of its history dates back over 450 years since the Conquest of Cortes in 1521. The building was erected in what was the great palace Tlahuica of the ancient inhabitants of the city of Cuauhnahuac. Thereafter, the place would be destined to undergo several changes; it  was a public building between 1630 and 1635, it was converted in prison from 1747 to 1821 where Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon was put up as a defendant, seat of the interim government of the Republic of Juan Alvarez in 1855, official office of Archduke Maximiliano between 1864 and 1866 and  government of the  newly elected state of Morelos from 1872 onwards until it become museum by the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
