These ruins are the site where the great temple of the Aztecs once stood, the ancient capital of Tenochtitlan. Much of its structure, was destroyed by the Spanish conquest. The Metropolitan Cathedral was built with stones brought from these temples, and today it is known that there are still buildings from this ancient empire which remain hidden underneath the bottom of this church and the surroundings. The collection that makes up the museum began to be discovered between 1978 and 1982,  but it wasn’t until October 12, 1987, that it was opened as the Museo del Templo Mayor, where you can see great artifacts that were extracted from the grounds which compromise the archaeological zone. Its facilities have 8 rooms and a hall for special exhibitions. It offers the following services: access to the museum and archaeological site, audio guides, shopping, books, cinema club, educational services, guided tours, access for disabled persons, friends of the museum, nighttime visits, exhibitions, a library and documentation center and areas of the museum for cultural events. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 5:00. Admission of Sundays is free for national citizens.
