This monument was made by the sculptor Miguel Noreña, and is dedicated to the memory of the illustrious German cosmographer Enrico Martinez, who in 1590 arrived in New Spain and undertook a project that was initiated in 1607 to drain the Mexico Valley. The sculpture is visible next to the Cathedral in the Plazoleta de Marques, a site that has survived since colonial times and dates from 1878.
