The evidence of human occupation in Becan goes back to the year 600 B.C.  Nevertheless, the time of its prosperity was between the years 600 and 1000 of our era, when the city had the role of being the regional capital due to its strategic location (being located almost in the middle of the base of the Yucatan Peninsula), and thus having a large concentration of goods and services and many establishments. Later, the population reduced little by little until its total disappearance approximately in the year 1450.
Its name that in Mayan language means “Ravine or Canyon formed by water”, indicating the  most remarkable characteristic of the site, a moat that surrounds the main architectonic elements comprised by the most voluminous and elevated buildings of the site.

The Becan archaeological site is located in the south of the state of Campeche, taking Highway 180 toward Champoton.

The site is open every day from 8:00 to 5:00. Admission fee: $55.00 pesos. Entrance is free on Sundays for nationals with I.D.
